About Us

In our normal lives Ed is a teacher and Helen is a geneticist. Last year, Helen finished her PhD, so we decided it was the best time to set off on a long dreamed of trip to China by bike. Ed reluctantly gave up a great job, but as he put it: "It's about time I went to see some of the places I teach about". In the end, we reached China and cycled over 15500 km. We are now back in the UK. Thank you to all the wonderful people who looked after us on our trip. We often felt humbled by the kindness of strangers.

Sarajevo to Dubrovnik

Setting off from Konjic on (another) road with mined verges, on our way to Mostar....

... towards a road that turned out not to exist.

After toiling up a steep landrover track into the middle of nowhere , not entirely sure where we were, we decided to turn back. With no town in sight, and having passed more mine signs , we decided that we did not fancy camping in the middle of the road ... despite the beautiful location.

We asked to camp on these lovely people's farm, in the valley below, and they invited us in for coffee and homemade farm produce. Thanks Mr and Mrs Zdravko!

They also showed us a much better route to Mostar that actually existed (although it did not exist on our map)!!

Another 1000m decent followed, putting a very big smile on Ed's face!!!

Mostar is an amazing town, almost completely destroyed in the war, the famous Stari Most bridge and a large part of the old town have now been rebuilt, but the scars of war are still everywhere.

A day trip to Medugorje, the third largest Catholic pilgrimage sight in the world, and by far the most affluent town we have visited in Bosnia & Hercegovina...

The Kravice waterfalls.

Poticitelj at dusk.

The beautiful Polopov Polje valley and some more lovely people who let us camp in their garden and made us coffee.

Crossing the former Serb-Croat frontline on the way to Croatia.

Yet more mortar blasts in the road, a common sight in BiH.

Meeting Helen's mum in beautiful Dubrovnik.

  1. That is amazing that you saw, and managed to photograph, Gollum coming out of the water at the Kravice Waterfalls.
