About Us

In our normal lives Ed is a teacher and Helen is a geneticist. Last year, Helen finished her PhD, so we decided it was the best time to set off on a long dreamed of trip to China by bike. Ed reluctantly gave up a great job, but as he put it: "It's about time I went to see some of the places I teach about". In the end, we reached China and cycled over 15500 km. We are now back in the UK. Thank you to all the wonderful people who looked after us on our trip. We often felt humbled by the kindness of strangers.

The UK

Well, we made it out of Britain and are having a great time. A few teething problems to start with, but the bikes are running smoothly and we are getting more efficient. Our "short & gentle" introduction went out the window on day one with a 120km ride from Glasgow to Nick and Camilla's house, but with such a warm welcome and great meal, it was worth it!

The Borders were really beautiful and great for riding. Not an area that either of us had explored much despite living so close for so long. It was the Northumberland coast that was the real surprise though; again, we had never been, but we were so impressed by the beautiful beaches and scenery. We were able to wild camp the whole time in stunning places and we have met lots of fabulous people who have been really friendly and encouraging about out trip. We also managed to meet up with Mark and Simon (Helen's brother and cousin) who were cycling up from Newcastle to Edinburgh which was a really nice surprise.


The only problem is the smell coming from Ed's cycling shorts!
